Gono Bishwabidyalay was founded by the Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK) Public Charitable Trust, which originated during the 1971 Liberation War. GK, a globally renowned NGO, has been instrumental in Bangladesh's development since 1972, particularly in advancing women's rights and reducing gender inequality. It introduced innovative programs such as health insurance, preservation of folk culture and art, and played a key role in formulating the Bangladesh National Drug Policy, benefiting the nation in multiple ways.
GK's impact has earned widespread recognition, including prestigious awards like the Independence Day Award (1978), Ramon Magsaysay Award (1985), and the Right Livelihood Award (1992). Guided by the same vision for social change, GK established Gono Bishwabidyalay on 14 July 1998, continuing its mission of empowerment and education.
