Dr. Md. Ali Azam Khan
Welcome to Politics and Governance department
Politics and Governance at Gono Bishwabidyalay has emphasized the subjects of development and social change as fields of study. This approach of seeking knowledge is justified because the world today is experiencing drastic economic, cultural, political, technological and environmental changes. This is especially true for developing countries like Bangladesh where these changes are posing challenges for human development. These changes have far reaching implications for poverty, economic growth, social harmony and political stability. Why do only a few developing countries succeed to improve governance and achieve economic growth? Why other political economies remain stuck in poverty and weak governance? In order to answer these questions the discipline has included courses on Political Economy, Development, Gender, Environment, Human Rights and Poverty. It leads to the understanding that effective governance is a key to sustained economic growth. When a country has a well functioning bureaucracy, competent law enforcing agencies and a capable judiciary, it means that the country would grow economically through the functioning of a business-friendly bureaucracy. Thereby, the study of Politics and Governance gives the learners the ability to influence and persuade the authorities to conform to broad developmental thrusts and to steer the direction in which the government is headed. The forces of globalization have enhanced the necessity for such knowledge.
