The Department of Sociology and Social Work at Gono Bishwabidyalay has been offering four year B.S.S. (Honours) Programme inSociology with the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2009. The major thrust to bring these two disciplines under one umbrella is to make them complementary to each other for increasing usefulness of these two subjects in the service of society. Sociology deals with complex human behavior. It intends to find out the causal relationships of social phenomena. With strict objectiveness Sociology strives to generate knowledge about society. This is the nature of Sociology, which is called a pure science, the knowledge of which can be used by policy makers/development planners for appropriate measures. Social Work, on the other hand, deals with policies and programs that could be adopted for the betterment of society. Community development, eradication of poverty, crime and other social problems are the major concern of Social Work. Students of Sociology will take a few basic courses of Social Work, and students of Social Work will take a few basic courses of Sociology as requirements for a BSS Honours degree. In fact it will be mandatory for a student to take minimum 78 credit hours in her/his respective majoring subject, 48 more credit hours from Social Work/Sociology and other departments and 8 more credits for viva-voce (134 credit hours in total). The Department of Sociology and Social Work deals not only with the basic courses but also with Bengali, English, Bangladesh Liberation War, Gender Studies & Computer skills so that the graduates can effectively work in various fields. For getting admission into the B.S.S. Honours in Sociology, a minimum 2.5 GPA is required both in the S.S.C. and H.S.C. Examinations.
