The structure of Gono Bishwabidyalay makes it a unique private biomedical teaching and research university in Bangladesh. Microbiologists play central key role in biomedical and biotechnological research and development. Gono Bishwabidyalay opened the integrated B.Sc. (Hons) course in microbiology in 1998 under the faculty of Health Science. Within short period of commencement, it became a successful department with a wide range of research interests and a commitment to excellent teaching at all levels of microbiology disciplines such as Environmental Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Microbial Biotechnology, Clinical and Medical microbiology, Immunology and Vaccine Development, Industrial Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Agriculture Microbiology etc. The teachers and students of this department maintain a friendly relationship that enhances interactions at all levels academic relevance and ensures access to all resources and equipments. Each member of the microbiology family is committed to maintain a congenial, cooperative and supportive environment. The department has excellent standard working research and practical-laboratories and a well-developed Internet networking system.

The faculties of the Department of Microbiology carry out multi-disciplinary research programs in microbial genetics, pathogenesis, immunology, and virology. M.Sc. students should conduct the research program at the end of all theoretical courses. The final 4th year undergraduate students of the department are engaged in various mini-research projects relevant to health, environment and industrial issues of Bangladesh. Besides, there are collaborative studies between Gonoshasthaya vaccine research laboratory (GVRL) and National Public Health Institute (KTL), Helsinki, Finland, where faculties and the microbiology students play key roles. The faculties are publishing their research-finding in national and international journals.
